33rd Annual Unicoi County Apple Festival

in downtown Erwin. The festival is a celebration and presentation of the unique heritage, foods, crafts and culture of the Southern Appalachian region. The festival features more than 300 handmade craft vendors lining the streets of downtown Erwin, Gospel entertainment, children's area, cooking contest and much more. Held the first full weekend in October. Festival dates: Oct. 1-2, 2010.

The Nolichucky, winding through both North Carolina and Tennessee, offers a variety of whitewater rapids (guided class III and IV) that cut their way through a beautiful 3000' gorge. Located 1.4 miles north of I-26. Barbecue is our specialty. Freshly smoked meats are marinated before cooking so that they retain their natural juices. Special sauces compliment the tender meats. We're told it's the best BBQ around. Hand-tossed pizzas are made fresh to order. Specially prepared sauces made with local vegetables and a variety of toppings allow diners to create pizzas to satisfy their cravings, from traditional to inventive. Located on the banks of the Nolichucky River directly across from the majestic 800-foot "Devil's Looking Glass." Live music weekends.

Unicoi County Heritage Museum

Located 12 miles off I-26 and .5 miles from US 19/23. 1903 restored home on the grounds of the Erwin National Fish Hatchery. The museum contains turn-of-the century items such as Blue Ridge Pottery, a country store, and Clinchfield Railroad memorabilia. Open May-Sept. 1-5pm; Sat. & Sun. in Oct. AC (donation). L/HA.

Erwin National Fish Hatchery

Located 1 mile from I-26. The hatchery produces 10 million disease-free eggs annually from four strains of Rainbow Trout broodstock. These eggs are shipped to federal, state and tribal hatcheries all over the United States to support recreational fishing efforts. Guided group tours with advance reservations. The facilities are also open to the public for self-guided tours. Open Mon-Fri. 7am-3:30 p.m. F/HA.

Woodsmoke Campground

Located .10 mile off I-26, exit. 32. The distinctive totem, carved by Unicoi County artist and Woodsmoke Campground owner Urban Bird marks the entrance to the lushly wooded 71 acres campground established in 1997. This campground features shady hiking trails and is surrounded by the Cherokee National Forest. 29 RV campsites and 4 primitive sites nestled among trees and a small stream at the base of the mountain. Electric, water, bathhouse, pay phone, grills, pets welcome and picnicking. Open Mar. - Nov. PC (local), TC, CC accepted. F/HA.
