Tennessee Newspaper & Printing Museum
In 1791, George Roulstone and Robert Ferguson set out across the North Carolina mountains—armed with only a small printing press. After settling in the tiny town of Rogersville, they created The Knoxville Gazette, the first newspaper published in Tennessee. They also laid the foundation for Rogersville’s next claim to printing fame—the country’s first two abolitionist newspapers. Today, just a few blocks from where that first printing took place, the Tennessee Newspaper and Printing Museum is home to 19th century printing equipment, a lineage of printing presses, and reproductions of those very first newspapers.
