Gray Fossil Site & Museum
Northeast Tennessee has a big story to tell—one that’s been tucked away underground for over 5 million years. Located just 15 minutes from Johnson City, the Gray Fossil Site and Museum gives a first-hand look back at the late Miocene Period—a time when the Appalachian region was home to rhinos, tapirs, saber-toothed cats, and short-faced bears. The 33,000 square-foot Visitor’s Center features massive skeletons, life-sized murals, interactive displays, and eerie re-creations of Northeast Tennessee’s ancient past. There’s also an observation lab—where visitors can watch paleontologists examine recently discovered remains.
