Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium

In 1673, British explorers reported seeing an isolated mountain ridge characterized by unique topography, an enclosed natural watershed, and glorious natural beauty. This ridge, which later become known as Bays Mountain, was soon recognized by settlers as a pristine collection of pure natural resources and a diverse array of natural habitats. Today, Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium (in Kingsport) is a 3,550-acre outdoor classroom—home to otters, bobcats, wild turkeys, beaver dams, free-roaming deer, cave systems, and an outdoor wolf habitat, where visitors can “howl with the wolves” on a regular basis. The park also features a planetarium, 27 miles of hiking trails and various learning centers, where nature enthusiasts can get an up-close view of falcons, owls, snakes, turtles, and a wide array of other rarely seen creatures. Additionally, the Park hosts barge rides (weather permitting) atop a beautiful 44-acre lake.
