Bonsai exhibit returning to ETSU museum
JOHNSON CITY – The Mid-Appalachian Bonsai Kai will once again host the Invitational Bonsai Exhibit at the East Tennessee State University and General Shale Brick Natural History Museum and Visitor Center at the Gray Fossil Site. The exhibit will be on display Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11-12, from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m., Warren Hill will demonstrate a bonsai design on a “dramatic” juniper – as described by Mike Deitz, who is supplying the yamadori (potted tree). Hill brings 50 years of experience and artistry to this year’s exhibition. Former curator at the United States Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., Hill continues a long history of teaching and promoting the art of bonsai.
He will also judge and present awards during a ceremony at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. Awards include “People’s Choice,” “Best in Show,” “Best Shohin” (small), “Best Chuuhin” (medium), “Best Ogata” (large), and a number of honorable mentions.
Visitors will be able to start or grow their own bonsai collections with help from representatives from Charlie Smith’s Pottery and Green Thumb Nursery. A silent auction that includes various bonsai and garden-related items will be held during the exhibit and will close on Sunday at 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Mid-Appalachian Bonsai Kai, and all winners must be present.
The museum is located 1.8 miles from exit 13 on Interstate 26. Hours are 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, or special assistance for those with disabilities, call toll free (866) 202-6223 or visit www.grayfossilmuseum.com.
